About the Program

The "A Letter to Your Congressman" Initiative was created in 2017 as an aftermath of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas mass shooting. The purpose of the initiative was to provide students with an avenue to create legislative change beyond protesting. The program has sent around 500 letters to local, state, and federal officials.

My name is Jordyn Allen. I’m sure you are fully aware of the tragedy relating to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 individuals and injured even more. I live about 15 minutes away from this school and have many friends who live, and have lived, in the Parkland area. While the media has done a good job in covering the tragedy, students who attend Broward County Schools, as well as across the nation, have spoken out to the point where it is impossible for them to be ignored by policy makers regarding the issues that matter most to them. The students of my home county are a prime example of the power that we as teens posses when we come together to demand change. I would like to start a letter writing campaign where we write letters to our Congressman voicing our concerns and advocating for change. I'm asking each teen to to write a letter to their Congressman voicing their concern about societal conflicts, whether it be gun laws, police brutality, racial/gender inequality, etc., following a solution that can be enacted. It’s time that we stop tweeting and sharing, and begin taking action.
